Bupropion

What is bupropion?
Bupropion is an atypical antidepressant classified as a norepinephrine-dopamine reuptake inhibitor (NDRI). It increases available levels of dopamine and norepinephrine in the brain (especially in areas that control motivation, reward, and appetite) without significantly affecting serotonin — which is why it’s less likely to cause weight gain or sexual side effects compared to SSRIs.

How Does Bupropion Work?

Bupropion targets key brain pathways to support both mood and appetite control:

  • Boosts Dopamine & Norepinephrine Blocks reuptake, allowing these neurotransmitters to remain active longer in areas that drive motivation, focus, and impulse control. This often translates to better energy, drive, and resistance to cravings.

  • Reduces Food Reward & Hedonic Eating Dampens the dopamine “reward hit” from high-calorie, hyper-palatable foods (sweets, carbs, comfort foods), making them less appealing and reducing pleasure-driven snacking or emotional eating.

  • Enhances Satiety & Metabolic Signals May mildly increase resting energy expenditure and strengthen hypothalamic satiety signals, helping people feel satisfied with smaller portions.

  • Supports Mood & Motivation Without Sedation Stimulates reward and motivation circuits, helping lift the “stuck on the couch” feeling common in chronic stress or low-grade depression—without the jittery crash seen with traditional stimulants.

  • Most people notice subtle appetite control and a gentle mood/energy lift within 2–6 weeks, with more consistent results (especially weight-related) over 3–6 months when paired with diet, movement, and sleep optimization.

Potential Benefits

1. Weight Management & Craving Control

  • Reduces cravings for carbs, sweets, and comfort foods

  • Less emotional/stress eating and reward-driven snacking

  • Supports 5–10% body weight loss over 6–12 months (especially strong when paired with naltrexone, diet, and exercise — as seen in Contrave trials)

  • Helps break through plateaus when lifestyle alone isn’t enough

2. Energy, Mood & Motivation Support

  • Improved daily energy and mental stamina without feeling overstimulated

  • Better motivation to exercise, meal prep, or stick to goals

  • Lift in mild depression, low drive, or “blah” feelings tied to chronic stress

  • Fewer side effects like sexual dysfunction or sedation (compared to SSRIs)

Many people notice easier appetite control and a subtle energy/mood lift within 2–6 weeks, with more consistent weight progress over 3–6 months when combined with lifestyle changes.

Off-label use for weight loss or metabolic support is not FDA-approved. Information here comes from clinical trials (especially Contrave studies), real-world use, and functional medicine experience.
