What Is LL-37?

LL-37 (also called human cathelicidin or hCAP-18 fragment) is a naturally occurring 37-amino-acid peptide produced by your immune cells (neutrophils, macrophages, epithelial cells, etc.). It’s part of your body’s innate immune defense system.

LL-37 is best known as an antimicrobial peptide, but it does much more than just kill bugs. It acts as a multi-tasking immune modulator. Key mechanisms include:

• Direct Antimicrobial Action It disrupts bacterial, fungal, viral, and even some parasitic membranes by forming pores or “carpet-like” structures → directly kills or inactivates pathogens (including many antibiotic-resistant strains).

• Immune System Modulation

  • Attracts immune cells (chemotaxis for neutrophils, monocytes, T-cells)
